This is the Gulf side of Pelican Island about a half mile before land's end on Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

You cannot believe how good that rag felt pressed upon my face by that cold north wind Saturday and Sunday on Pelican Island. Even though I was wearing a toboggan & a ski mask, I still needed more protection on my nose and lips.

Saturday's storm was a wicked one. I have never experienced sustained winds like I faced Saturday afternoon on Pelican Island. Here's the waves crashing on the jetties located on the Mobile Bay side of Ft. Gaines on the east end of Dauphin Island.

As you can see, Saturday's north wind pushed a lot of water out of Pelican Bay on the east end of Dauphin Island and underneath what had been water, all you could find was sand. You can see Ft. Morgan on the horizon to your left.

I was the ONLY person on Pelican Island on Saturday & Sunday. I walked all the way to land's end & it was dangerous out there because you could have died from exposure. I bundled up, wore a ski mask & covered my face with a heavy rag. I didn't have to tie the rag around my neck. The wind stuck it right where it was needed on my face. Here I am on Sunday after returning to Dauphin Island. Joe Thames, a Mobile native, said Sunday's tides on the bay were as low as any he had ever seen.

Last Thursday night's WORLD'S GREATEST JEWISH CHRISTMAS PARTY was my eleventh in a row so I feel qualified to say that 2010's was SUPERB! Shelby spent a lot of time with us & my son, Christopher, really enjoyed listening to the Senator make observations about the current political scene. Even though the song TOBACCO ROAD was a hit for THE NASHVILLE TEENS in '64, I didn't pay any attention to it until THE BLUES MAGOOS cut it in '66. They were one of the biggest groups in my life during my Jr. year @ DHS. I guess it was because THE BLUES MAGOOS were so big with my friends who had already gone off to college.

Igor~
This is what I want on the back of each T shirt.
Do I need to send you an image with more pixels for both images?
best,

Yeah, you'll get your Kritmuh present @ THE NEW YEAR'S EVE DINNER DANCE.
Are y'all thinking about hanging around until midnight?
These T shirts are gonna be beautiful &, even though it was FOR FREE, y'all are my first sponsor! I want to find a sponsor for a version of the shirt for every bay between St. Marks & Grand Bay. Do ya think we could replicate that watercolor effect from Chuck's work & use it for the color of other maps for T shirt logos?

best,
r

Chuck Bryan's watercolor is gonna be the first one. ST. ANDREWS BAY gonna be on the front & we gonna put a one color STRANGERS LOGO on the back of this white T shirt. IGOR likes the "antique look" Chuck's watercolor gives the image so that's what we're going with. Here's the version Kevin Pake did of Chuck's work. As we find sponsors for these shirts along the bays of the panhandle, this is probably something like what it's gonna look like unless somebody's gotta better idea.See ya @ THE BEACHHOUSE January 1 ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Etf_TH5Kk&feature=related

I want a one color Strangers logo on the back of this batch of WHITE T shirts. I'll be bringing them to the New Year's Eve DINNER DANCE. Maybe do something with beach music. Jimmy & Larry,

I've agreed to buy $600 worth of T shirts with this Chuck Bryan image on the front from William Alford, a.k.a. IGOR, late Sixties soundman extraordinaire in Tuscaloosa, originally from Samson.

Hey Igor, I'm in for $600 worth of T shirts with this image on the front & give me numbers on the same $600 batch with some kind of one color New Year's image on the back. PLEASE give me the best number & the right sizes.
Muchas, mi amigo!

So Jimmy & Larry, would you be interested in putting your New Year's Eve Show's mark on the back of my ST. ANDREWS BAY t shirt?

best,
r

Today I was talking to one of our tenants and I got this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach & all I could think about was "Our country is in BIG TROUBLE." My son witnessed this conversation but he didn't think it was any big deal because the tenant & I weren't arguing. What this cat said to me chilled me to the bone. He was totally in sympathy with the Panama City shooter and complained that it wasn't right that he was shot by a security guard and alleged a cover up because the videotape didn't show the shooter committing suicide. Anywayzzzzzz... it scares me to death that I've got to figure out how to live in this country & do my job when so many of my customers are dangerous and worthless people.

This song came out about the first time I got BURNED REAL GOOD ('74/'75) by THE CARTEL.I knew RIGHT THEN it wasn't my Mama's or my Sister's or my Grandmamas' CARTEL. If there's any song that STILL sums up my view of THE CARTEL,it's this 'un.

Is this cat some of yo' kin folks? Mark, Lee & I are going to B'ham Saturday to meet the artist, Nathan Glick.

Aretha's first hit, I NEVER LOVED A MAN THE WAY I LOVE YOU, was recorded in Muscle Shoals.
The B-side of that 45 was DO RIGHT WOMAN, DO RIGHT MAN written by Vernon, Alabama's Dan Penn & LaGrange, Georgia's Chips Moman. Here it is performed by Dothan's BopCats with THE HONKY TONK ANGELS @ the Sept. 10 ALS Lou Gehrig's Disease Songwriter's Roundtable Fundraiser in the Dothan Civic Center http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_Dmi7iGYrQ

The Nov. issue of CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE has a feature called THE GREATEST ROCK 'N' ROLL STORIES EVER TOLD. One story by Peter Makowski is entitled "THE GUY'S A BULLY AND DESERVES TO DIE!"~ A Tale of Guns, Dwarves and Homicidal Bass Players On The Road In The American South with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Atlanta Rhythm Section. The story is about how Ronnie Van Zant intervened to prevent a good friend of mine, Paul Goddard, from shooting another good friend of mine, Robert Nix.

Looking @ this 1799 Ellicott map of the delta you can see how The Frist Battle of Ft. Bowyer proved Mobile Point's STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE. Through that pass an invading navy had land access to Natchez & New Orleans plus being able to take the turn into the Mississippi Sound & avoid the Mississippi River by entering Lake Pontchartrain through the Rigolets.

Do any of y'all remember playing SPIN THE BOTTLE? We had our own CLOVERDALE version & IT WAS THE RAGE when we were in the 5th & 6th grade back in '61 & '62. You'd spin the bottle and pair up with a girl but you wouldn't kiss her in front of everybody. You'd walk around the house together & if anything happened it was just between you & the girl. No one would spin the bottle until the couple returned. The only time we played was @ MYF socials & birthday parties but a couple of times we played it on top of the picnic tables beside the tennis courts @ the Rec Center. When we played there, you had to walk all the way around the Dothan High track together. That was a quarter mile so you were either gonna get very, very bored or HAVE A LOT OF FUN! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WIvZu4dPQQ

You see on this 1799 Ellicott map that MILLER'S PLACE is located just below present day Flomaton across the river from Century, Florida. This is where the Indians were able to pick up guns & ammunition without having to go all the way to Pensacola. http://books.google.com/books?id=A7T2HCPyMhkC&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=%22miller%27s+place%22+escambia+florida&source=bl&ots=Y70IrRgGQm&sig=erAyQbz7GomA0TEOAngfbpXQ_wc&hl=en&ei=hmv3TKWPFMX6lwePhtWPAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBMQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22miller%27s%20place%22%20escambia%20florida&f=false
