Tuscaloosa Street  Lights

Tuskaloosa is to be electrically illuminated at once. There's no need of it. They don't dig holes and keep lime and brick in the streets over which people might break their brittle necks in Tuskaloosa. They don't have burglars. Only chicken thieves down there.

Electric lights will only facilitate dexterous manipulations of gay rooters,' and matronly hens, and wanton pullets. But Tuskaloosa must be fashionable. She must wear jewels, because all other cities are studded with, more brilliants than diamonds, and more lustrous than silver or gold. A gay and fair dame is Tuskaloosa, arrayed in roses and decked with gleaming lights brighter than stars brought down from the skies. We will learn to wonder, and admire the more the galaxy of God in the bended heavens when we have confessed, in our hearts, the modest, silent witchery of charms with which Tuskaloosa will be invested by celestial illumination whelming the serene old city in a shining sea deluged by a gleaming river of resplendent glory.

That's somewhat steep ; but if it please, the innocent, good people of the old capital, what's the use making a fuss about a little rhetorical extravagance electrically illuminated. Birmingham News..

"Well it is up to Tuskaloosa now. To get the free collection and distribution of mails there are several conditions. First, the business of the office. That part is all right. Then there are others the town must be well lighted ; the name of the streets must be posted at the intersections of the streets and the houses must be numbered ; the sidewalks have to be in good condition, so that mud and the like will not deter the carriers in their delivery.

The light question you have already settled and when the postmaster certifies that the other requirements are fulfilled, the de partment can act. My part of the work will be completed when I make the recommendation, which I will do at once and then it will depend upon when the city does its part." When asked as to how soon delivery could be inaugurated if the city acted at once, Mr Bailey said : That will be after congress meets. I should say it would take to about the first of February to get start ed." Mr Bailey further stated that the location of boxes and the establishment of the routes had only been partly done. These - are matters that can be attended to according as needs require. For instance, according to the present prospects there will be two deliveries and two collections each day, the time to be regulated by the principal mails.

The carriers will number two and the present idea is to extend west as far as the M & O, south to Crescent City avenue and ast to Queen City St. This happens to follow almost exactly the old city corporation lines, though the city's limits do not especially figure in making out routes, which may be extendedjjor contracted, according as the service demands. The newt of so early an establishment of this much to be desired institution will be received with great satisfaction on every side and the improvements in streets and sidewalks will in themselves be decidedly desirable things..
