f TRAGICAL: -Ou Saturday last. was killed in this city by Wm. H. Grimes.

It appears that the deceased had made threats to take life of Grimes, which, coming to the know ledge the latter, induced him to be on his guard, as ho well knew the violent and desperate character of bis adversary, Verrell approached within about furty paces of Grimes, calling on him to come out with his arms, as he was ready for him. Al that ment, Grimes discharged a gun loaded with buckshot, and Verrell tell dend, one uf the shot having penetrated his head, just behind the right ear. Mr. Grimes forthwith surrendered himself to the civil authorities; and in the afternoon an examina• tion was had before N. L.

Whifeld and W. R. Smith, Esqs., Justices of the Peace, which resulted in his prompt and complete discharge. Tuscaloosa Monitor, 3d inst..

RETIRED FROM BUSINESS. Col. John Glascock, after spending 50 years of his life in the active pursuits of a mercantile life, proposes to retire and spend the balance of ihs days in quiet repose. He has a large circle of friends who wish him a pleasant time in his declining days. No man in the world loves a joke better than Mr.

Glascock, and he told us a good one yesterday that will do to preserve. He said: "In 1836, or thereabouts, the merchants of Tuskaloosa rode through on horseback to Baltimore, Md., and there took the train for New York to lay in their stock of goods. That was the nearest point that they could reach a railroad, and they had their goods shipped round by Mobile in a sail vessel, and thence up the Warrior. Sometimes it took their goods three months to reach them after being shipped from New York. There was an old gentleman in Tuskaloosa by the name of Paul.

Being a man of little education, he firmly believed that he could go all the way on horseback. He started and got as far as New York, and of course had to turn around and retrace his sthps, When he arrived back in TuscalooS& some one asked him why he did not go on to Liverpool. He replied by saying, 'I got as far as New York, but the water was up and I could not go any further.' He after wards killed a negro and had to run off to Texas, and I lost sight of him after that.' - -Tuskaloosa Gazette.
