 In the context of psychology, "denial" is considered a coping mechanism that can arise from cognitive dissonance, where someone actively rejects or ignores information that contradicts their existing beliefs, often leading to obsessive thoughts as a way to maintain that denial and alleviate the discomfort caused by the conflicting ideas; essentially, refusing to acknowledge the reality of a situation to avoid internal conflict.
