SANDY CLAWS brought me a new camera fo' Kritmuh so I happier than a pig in the sunshine! Tested it out for the frist time @ Greenwood Cemetery this afternoon. A lot of early sandlot football got played around the Jemison House. Three of the VandeGraaf brothers who were born & raised in the old house on Greensboro Ave., Adrian , Hargrove & William Travis "Bully",all played for the Crimson Tide during the 1912 season,Adrian's Senior year. Bully was BAMA'S FIRST ALL AMERICAN. Their Daddy, Adrian S. VandeGraaf owned the Jemison House & played on Yale's first 11 man football team in 1880. This one shows THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA CORPS OF CADETS gathering into their formations on the stormy Monday night of April 3, 1865 beside the Little Round House located next to the 70' X 70' Rotunda. The Rotunda was burned by the Yankees on Tuesday, April 4, 1865.The foundation stones of this building are preserved on the walkway in front of the Gorgas Library.The President's Mansion across the Quad is also pictured. One inaccuracy in this painting are the guardhouse drummers. Here's a picture of William Travis "Bully" Van de Graaff from the '26 Corolla when BAMA won it's first National Championship. In 1915 Bully was selected as THE CRIMSON TIDE'S FIRST ALL AMERICAN. Bully was the freshman coach in '26 & later that year he took over as head coach of Colorado College in Colorado Springs. He was replaced as BAMA's freshman coach in '27 by DOTHAN'S JOHNNY MACK BROWN. Here's a picture of Adrian S. Van de Graaff from the '93 Corolla. He was on Yale's first 11 man football team in 1880 & later married one of the Jemison girls and all three of their boys were born in the Jemison Mansion. All three played for the Tide at the same time and Bully was our first All-American in 1915.(ninety years later the Britt family were the next family to put 3 boys on the Crimson Tide team at the same time) Bully's younger brother, Robert, invented the Van de Graaff Generator which enabled scientists to identify the properties of the plutonium atom which was the most important step leading to the creation of the atomic bomb. Robert later used his generator on silicon which led to the invention of the microchip.

"What you may not know is, at the same time, I played regularly at the infamous Doc Greenfield’s Club Capri, in the Baptist Bottom. I played bass with “The Impacts” which featured Davie Coolie on keys, Wayne “Sugar” Johnson on Drums, David McNeal on guitar, and Lamar Spence on Lead Vocals. We were the only white band playing there. Local DJ, “Preston T” was our booking agent. I guess we were quite a novelty back then, being so young and light skinned, but we could really play well, and we covered all the popular “Soul” tunes… The folks treated us very well there, and really seemed to enjoy our show… This always surprised me since, at least once a month, the Club Capri would feature the real thing such as Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett. I also saw Ike & Tina Turner, and Joe Tex there. That place was happenin… Later on David Adkins and I played there with Billy King and the Rhythm Kings featuring Little Lois. Unfortunately we didn’t last long… David and I played a lot of BB King , Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, etc., and some number of people there, didn’t like the straight blues… Billy King once told me, “the black folk didn’t like straight ahead blues, because it reminded them of the bad old days”… In truth, I think it may have been just a little too weird for some of them to witness a couple of young smartass white kids burnin up the blues…"

In 1945, 32-year old Bryant met Washington Redskins owner George Marshall at a cocktail party hosted by the Chicago Tribune, and said he had turned down offers for assistant coaching positions at Alabama and Georgia Tech. Bryant told Marshall that he was intent on becoming a head coach. After meeting with Byrd the next day, Bryant received the job as head coach of the Maryland Terrapins. In his only season at Maryland, Bryant led the team to a 6–2–1 record. The Misfitz, Tuscaloosa, Alabama

In my early days of playing guitar and keyboard, growing up and living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I found myself in my first band we called The Misfitz.

The first lineup was Jonathan McAlister on bass and vocals, Rodney Etheridge on guitar, Bill Johnson on drums, and me on guitar, keys and vocals. There was another band in town called The Gents that was a couple of years older than us. They had Jim Coleman on guitar, Court Pickett on bass and lead vocals, Jimmy Romaine on rhythm guitar, and Lou Mullenix on drums.
They were a really good band I admired. I sort of looked up to the Gents and wanted The Misfitz to be as good or better, so there was a friendly competition going on.

The Gents played the YMCA every Saturday night for the high school kids, and the Misfitz played every Friday for a slightly younger crowd, the junior high kids. We also would get other little gigs here and there. As time went on we even played some fraternity parties at the University of Alabama.

Eventually the Misfitz became pretty popular, and when the new television station (WCFT, I believe) opened up shop in Tuscaloosa we were approached to do a Saturday morning show that was modeled after American Bandstand, creatively called Tuscaloosa Bandstand. By then, our rhythm guitar player, Rodney Etheridge, had been replaced by a great musician, Ronnie Brown. Ronnie added a lot of spark to the Misfitz, taking the band to another level. The host of the show was a well-known local DJ named Tiger Jack Garrett. We were riding high, playing the Y every Friday night and doing the Saturday morning TV show.

We were also listening to lots of other bands that either lived in Tuscaloosa or that would float through town and play the local armory, Ft. Brandon. Gary and The Top 10, the Rubber Band, the K-Otics, the 5 Men-Its, and the Allman Joys were just a few of the many bands that played there.

There was also a Battle of the Bands that went on there at one point. We entered and won second place for our age group, I honestly can't remember who won first. It was a long time ago. In any case, there was all this musical activity going on in ole' T-town.

All of us musicians were having a blast playing and doing our thing, listening to other bands, listening to records, learning our instruments, experimenting with arrangements, and such. It was a wonderful place and a wonderful time for all of us, and was a sort of breeding ground for musicians.

Occasionaly, we would go out of town and play in other cities- mostly college towns like Oxford and Jackson, Mississippi; Auburn, Alabama; Nashville, Tennessee, and such. We also played in Birmingham quite a lot, and even went to places in New Orleans,
down in Florida. It was sort of Chittlin' Circuit.

Eventually some of us began to intermingle and play with each other. When the Misfitz broke up, I wound up playing with some of these musicians. I played with Paul Hornsby of the 5 Men-Its (and who had gone to California and played with the Hour Glass, a precursor of the Allman Brothers Band) in a band called the South Camp, and later with Lou Mullenix and Court Pickett of the Gents in a band called Sundown after we had moved to Macon, Georgia. There were really some great musicians who came out of Tuscaloosa.

"Wow the Southcamp photo that was second is very similar to the one I took that afternoon in August of 1969. Same angle. There was a lot of jammin going on that afternoon. was Townsend the source for that picture? He is mistaken about Mullinex playing. My picture has Squirmy on drums (same shirt as in your pic, but you can see Bill's receding hairline in my pic, definitely not Lou. My pic also includes Hornsby and half of Chuck's head. Glen Butts is standing where Charlie is and Frank is playing bass. In your pic, Frank's bassman is on the ground but in by pic it is on the stage. I think that a lot of people played that day on the quad. The neat thing is that there is only a two receptacle plug that came out of the ground next to that big Oak Tree. All the power came from there. You had to be careful about how many amps were plugged in or someone would have to go and replace a fuse in the ROTC building."

Some went on to make a career of it- myself, Paul Hornsby, Ronnie Brown, Eddie Hinton, Lou Mullenix, Glen Butts, Charlie Hayward and others. Those were heady days and man, did we have fun!

I want to learn more about Captain Cayetano Perez. He commanded Fuerte Carlota in Mobile when the Americans took over on April 15, 1813. Issac Joslin in his book, THE WEST FLORIDA CONTROVERSY states that Perez evacuated to Pensacola & was court-martialed & the transcript of his trials, which were not resolved until 1822, fills 1250 folios.

Then Peter J. Hamilton in COLONIAL MOBILE states that Perez came back to Mobile & lived on Fish River.

The other thing I want to do is to document the Cuban connection for all the people who owned property in Mobile when the Americans took over. Bernardo Caro owned everything from Royal to the river. He had a plantation in Cuba & bastard young'uns living there. His neighbor, James Innerarity, his neighbor on the south, owned a plantation in Matanzas Province in Cuba & had an illegitimate family there. A buddy of mine's people owned the plantation in Matanzas where Selma's William Rufus King was inaugurated VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES & he's been there & photographed the ruins.

Got my copy of J.D. Weeks' PANAMA CITY MEMORIES in the mail today. Unbelievable! Includes reminiscences of Page Apartments where we stayed every summer from my birth in April of '50 until '56. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- On the maps, the line between Alabama and Florida appears as a bold black line. There are signs on the highways marking the spots where cars cross from one state into the other.

But for many years, the original state line was lost. Now, a Tuscaloosa man working with Auburn University has helped rediscover it.

"Ever since I've come to Tuscaloosa, I've heard people talk about the mound line," said Milton Denny, a surveyor who works part time with Auburn. "The line was probably the least defined line between the states because nobody knew where the mounds were."

Discovery of the original line doesn't change the official state line. Alabama and Florida have settled on 31 degrees latitude as the border, which can be easily located with modern technology. But most land surveys on either side of the border are based on the original line.

"We're hoping to come up with a map that will show good locations where the mounds are," Denny said. "And record that map in courthouses on both sides of the line."

The mound line, known as Ellicott's Line, was established by Andrew Ellicott, a prominent surveyor for the government in the republic's early years. He also worked on the Mason-Dixon line and the original survey of Washington, D.C.

To establish the boundary between Spanish Florida and the United States at the 31-degree line, Ellicott surveyed a line from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. The line would eventually become the Alabama-Florida state line east of Baldwin County to the Georgia state line, Denny said.

In Alabama, the best known marker for the line is Ellicott's Stone, a stone monument at the Mobile River.

"It's probably one of the oldest monuments in Alabama," Denny said. "Anything before 1800 in Alabama is pretty old."

To mark the rest of the line, the survey crew erected mounds about 4 feet tall about every mile. Over the years, farming and logging operations and ordinary erosion took their toll. Wooded areas grew up, the landscape changed and the mounds disappeared from sight.

By last year, only two were actually known, one near the Conecuh River and one near the Chattahoochee River. That gave Denny something to work with.

The line had been resurveyed in 1854 and a map created of the mounds. A historical researcher discovered the map of the resurvey and passed it on to Denny.

Using the map, the two known mounds and technology including Google Earth, Global Information System and Global Positioning System, Denny devised a formula to determine where the mounds are. He tested the theory by using the formula to locate the two known mounds and was dead on.

But going out and physically finding the mounds was a different matter. The area where they are is filled with swamps, marshes and beaver ponds.

Part of Denny's work with Auburn includes conducting workshops in the field for surveyors who need to renew their certification or get extra training. He decided to make finding the mounds the exercise for the Dec. 3-4 workshop.

Forty surveyors signed up for the project. Using Denny's formula, they searched the swamps and woods of South Alabama and North Florida for the mounds.

"We were excited because we were finding them where I thought they would be," Denny said. "We were finding them to a 10th of a second of where we thought they would be. And they were surveyors and when they found them, they could recognize what they were."

Warren Brown, a registered professional engineer from Tuscaloosa, took part in the project. His crew started out slowly. The first few sites they searched were agricultural fields or pine plantations, and it was obvious that the mounds would no longer be there.

Then they went to another site that hadn't seen as much human disturbance. They used hand-held GPS units to find the coordinates that Denny had provided and then began a circular search pattern around the coordinates.

"That first mound that we found, it was extremely exciting," Brown said. "We had literally just about given up and were heading back to the vehicles. I just kept my eyes on the ground and I saw it. I didn't know it was the mound. But I got up and stood on top of it and looked around 360 degrees and said, 'I think this is it.' "

The entire party began looking at the ground and Tuscaloosa resident Ike Espy pointed to the center of the mound.

"Right under my feet was a stake or what surveyors call a hub," Brown said. "It was a hand-hewn fat pine stake that some surveyor had put in the ground. Chances are it was pretty old. This was obviously the work of a surveyor from many, many years ago."

Brown's crew located two mounds with certainty and two more that appeared likely. They were usually within 50 feet of Denny's coordinates, but were well camouflaged by their surroundings.

"They don't pop out at you," Brown said. "You kind of look for a uniform depression in the ground that forms a 10- to 12-foot circle. Once you found the depression, the mound kind of pops out at you. The giveaway was the depression around the mound."

When the original survey crew made the mounds, it appeared that they stood in a circle and dug a trench around the point they were marking and used the dirt to make a mound. Not only would there be a mound, there would also be a depression around it. More dirt was added to them during the 1854 survey.

"It was like a doughnut when they finished," Denny said.

Later surveyors often drove stakes into the mounds as markers, making them easier to identify. But time took its toll on the mounds and changed their appearance.

"It's been a long time," Denny said. "There were a few of them where a surveyor had put a cedar post in them. That made it pretty easy. Most of them now are between 1 foot and 2.5 feet tall. They are generally round."

In some places, farming and logging obliterated the mounds. The more remote the location, the more likely the mounds were to still be there.

"The place that you find most of them is the most undesirable, undisturbed ground, the swamps," Denny said. "If it's been timbered and they're running all the machines over them, it probably ruins them."

Originally, there were 120 mounds. Denny expects to eventually be able to document 35 to 40.

"We have 24 of the mounds that we are absolutely certain of, and we put concrete markers on them," Denny said. "We have 10 locations that, because of flooding and problems with property owners, we haven't searched yet."

Denny is also working with a division of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that is responsible for state boundaries. They are trying to locate the spots where mounds have disappeared as well.

"Eventually, we would like to put a monument back in, even though the mound is gone," Denny said.

Working to find the mounds adds to Denny's appreciation for Ellicott's work. He had to sift his way through politics as well as swamps.

Ellicott discovered that Natchez, Miss., was above 31 degrees. When the Spanish found that they had ceded an important river port, they were angry. The two countries almost came to blows over it.

The wrangling with the Spanish delayed his work for a couple years. When he did start, he found the swampy terrain difficult to cover, Denny said. Ellicott got a schooner so that he could sail down the coast, run up rivers and use it for a base to survey from.

And trying to survey the line was technically difficult.

"The line is not technically a straight line," Denny said. "It's a latitude and it goes around the earth. The earth is a sphere and it's a curving line. He's in the field in 1799 sitting in a tent and he's using spherical trigonometry to calculate the difference between a straight line and a latitude. That's amazing."

Cleaning off my family plot in the City Cemetery over July 4th , got tired & retreated to the coping of a neighboring plot because the shadow of one those weird cedars that grow straight up like columns was where I needed to sit to cool off.
